“All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights”. “They are endowed with reason and conscience and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood”
This is the wording of Article 1 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
Unfortunately, the experiences of many people who have been diagnosed with a mental illness has shown that in practice they are not treated equally in many ways, but feel especially that their dignity and rights have been compromised.
In this presentation an effort is made to demonstrate the ways in which the rights of those with a mental illness are most often compromised. It looks at the flawed philosophical reasoning behind legislation and some healthcare practice and shows some examples of the way in which people may be treated by the public at large,
We hope that this course will provide food for thought for those who may unintentionally discriminate against those who have a diagnosis of mental illness, and that it will provide a thoughtful response to some of the outdated beliefs that still persist in public attitudes.
A short questionnaire follows, so that you may check your understanding and response to this course presentation.
